Local Events Calendar - May 2024

Here's a list of local events happening in IOWC and the Hampton Roads area, we hope you'll take these chances to explore our community and get to know all that the local area has to offer!


5/2 - May Day Night Out

Put on your finest May Day hat (think Derby Day, Easter Bonnets, or Ascot), and join participating downtown Smithfield shops and restaurants that will remain open until 7:30 p.m., providing specials, sales, and more. It's the hottest hat parade in town! Details can be found on Smithfield's website.


5/3 - Smithfield Ruritans Cruise-In Car Show

The Smithfield Ruritan Club will host a Cruise-In on the first Friday of each month, April through October at the Luter Sports Complex located at 900 W. Main Street in Smithfield from 5 - 8 p.m. This is a free event for car enthusiasts!

5/4-11-18-25 - Smithfield's Farmers Market

(Open 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)

This is the 22nd Season of the Smithfield Farmers Market, all the vendors focus on Farm Goods: farm grown, raised or fished products such as produce, meat, seafood, dairy, and dairy products eggs, animal products, honey, plants and flowers. They also have hot food vendors, baked goods, and some crafters!

5/4 - Battle of Smithfield Lecture & Walking Tour, 2pm

This is the 160th anniversary recounting of “the Town of Smithfield’s most dramatic event.” This two-day engagement between Union and Confederate troops saw artillery and musket fire reverberating up and down Main Street eventually resulting in the destruction of the US Army Gunboat Smith Briggs. Meet your guide at the museum for a brief overview of this Civil War battle as well as a walk along Main Street to several sites associated with these significant events.

5/5 - Cheeseburgers & Classic Cars Cruise-In

(2 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

Meet your friends, enjoy a burger and check out the classic cars on display at Farmers Table, located at 13416 Benns Church Blvd, Smithfield. Car show is held the first Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. and is free to attend.

5/5 - Windsor Castle Walking Tour

From the site's pre-colonial existence to the present day, Windsor Castle tells the fascinating history of the development of Smithfield. Join us for this walking tour through history as we explore the house and several of the outbuildings. Meet on the front steps of Windsor Castle, 301 Jericho Road, Smithfield. $5 per person. 5/18 - Carrollton Chalk Art Festival

(10 a.m. - 3 p.m.)

Enjoy a colorful day at Mary Heads Carter Park as talented contestants turn sidewalks into works of art! The event will feature live music, food, games, and lots of chalk. Bring the whole family, friends, and neighbors to join all the festivities. Anyone can participate as an artist or a spectator.

5/18 - Smithfield Art Festival

(9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)

The Smithfield Arts Festival returns for its 3rd year in historic Smithfield, VA along 3 blocks of Main Street! The event celebrates visual, performing, culinary, and literary arts and is held from 9 am to 4 pm with free admission. Artists, fine crafters, authors, performances and food will make this a fun and exciting event for all ages.

5/28 - Bookworm Discoveries at Windsor Castle Park

Join the Blackwater Regional Library and Isle of Wight County Museum at Windsor Castle Park for outdoor-themed programming featuring themes of agriculture, nature and bugs! This fun and free opportunity to learn a little local history with STEAM themes while enjoying some fresh air and the chance to check out some books is perfect for bookworms of all ages.

Met in the pole barn next to Windsor Castle at 301 Jericho Road, Smithfield. Dressing as a bookworm is optional but encouraged.
